What are the different carpets available in Australia?

The carpet industry is a massive business especially in countries that experience cold weather and the different types of carpets in Australia available to homeowners can be quite daunting when you are looking to buy new carpets. Before looking at the types of carpets lets quickly discuss why carpets are a good choice.

  • Décor:  With the massive range of different styles, colours and textures it is possible to find something that will complement the existing décor in your home or allow you to easily create an entire new feel simply by changing the floor covering.
  • Warmth:  Not only do carpets help keep a room warm but they also provide a luxurious feel with soft fibres allowing you to walk barefoot around your home in very cold weather.
  • Safety: Carpets not only provide a soft cushion for babies and toddlers that inevitably fall no matter how protective a parent you are but also provide a non-slip floor the elderly members of your family unlike tile or wood flooring.
  • Noise: Carpets will help to soften sounds and create a quieter indoor environment than tiles or wood.
  • Maintenance:  Carpets are very easy to maintain using a decent vacuum cleaner on a daily basis then having a professional clean done once a year for low traffic homes. This ensures that not only will your carpet look good but will last a long time.
  • Budget:  With the different types of carpet available it is possible for almost every one to be able to budget for wall to wall carpets. Okay that’s why carpets are a good choice but let’s discuss the types of carpets available in Australia.

Carpet types

  • Woven

These carpets are made on a loom and can either be a Plush (cut pile) or Berber (loop pile) or a combination of both cut and loop pile. These carpets can be made incorporating very intricate patterns and therefore are normally the most expensive type of carpet.

  • Needlefelt

Needlefelt carpets use more advanced technology to make using barbed and forked needles that produce a very durable finished product. Normally these types of carpets are used in heavy traffic commercial areas like hotels and offices.

  • Knotted

Knotted carpets are made by basically three different types of knots depending on the type of carpet. Shag carpets are made this way and the most well-known and expensive carpets that use hand knotting are oriental rugs.

  • Tufted

Tufted carpet pile is injected into its backing material that is then bonded to a second backing to make it stable. This is the most common carpet on the market today for domestic homes.

The above are just a small selection of the most common types of carpets available on the market. These carpets can be made with different types of fibres and yarns.

  • Nylon

Most of the carpets available today are made from nylon as it can be easily printed and is very durable. Nylon tends to stain easily so needs to have a protectant applied that fills the dye sites on the fibres.

  • Polypropylene

Polypropylene carpets are usually the least expensive as the yarns are inexpensive to produce but does not last as long as wool or nylon carpets. However commercial grade polypropylene are manufactured using very small loops that are hard wearing. These carpets are very stain resistant but not against substances that are oil based.

  • Wool

Wool carpets are extremely durable and are very easy to dye and are often blended with nylon to increase their durability. As wool is rather expensive there are only a relatively small variety of wool carpets on the market compared to other types.

  • Polyester

Due to the increase in raw materials polyester carpets are very competitively priced since early 2000. These carpets are very stain resistant as they do not have dye sites rather the colour is added during the molten state. Polyester tends to mat down quickly and is usually in the mid to low price range.
