What Type of Vacuum is Best for Carpets

Vacuum cleaner styles

We all like to have the latest gadgets and trendy looking items either for personal use or when decorating our home or have the latest appliances to use for cooking or cleaning and that is all good and well, however some things need to be practical in order to do what they were intended to do and vacuum cleaners are a very practical item if you buy one that is meant for the job. What is the best type of vacuum cleaner to use?

Look for a vacuum with a ‘beater head’ like this

There is a very simple answer to this question, one that has a separate brush motor or beater bar. If you are not sure if your vacuum cleaner has one then simply turn it upside down and look at where the dirt is sucked up. There will be a “tube” with generally spiral rows of brushes. Lots of modern vacuum cleaners look great with dust swirling around a see through section and the kids love them watching the dirt as it creates a tornado effect but they are only doing half the job.

Suction is very important but all that is doing is sucking up the loose dirt. Dirt gets trapped in between the carpet fibres, in the actual individual fibres themselves, as well as in the rest of the carpet and it is difficult to suck all this dirt out.  Not many people still do this but before the invention of the vacuum cleaner people used to take their rugs outside and actually beat them. If you have ever done this you will see that it takes quite a while to get all the dust out and that is exactly what a vacuum cleaner does that uses a beater bar. The beater bar actually beats the carpet in order to loosen the dirt and then it is vacuumed or sucked up.

A carpet that is vacuumed on a regular basis with the proper type of vacuum cleaner will last much longer and those areas that are used more often and develop tracks will be beaten daily and will not be so noticeable.  A build-up of dirt will bind the individual fibres of a carpet creating a smooth surface instead of the fluffy soft texture that they were when originally laid.

Although they will be more expensive it is best to try to find a vacuum cleaner from an industrial company rather than the local department store. These vacuum cleaners are designed not only to last longer due to regular use but also do a better job.  Carpets are an investment and although it is advised that you have them professionally cleaned twice a year by a company like Pure Dry, cleaning in itself will not make them miraculously look brand new unless you have maintained them on a regular basis using a decent vacuum cleaner.
